ZL2 Zinc Alloy

Hot chamber pressure diecasting Zinc alloy.

ZL2 is a Zinc based alloy which can be used for hot chamber pressure diecast components or gravity casting of prototype plastic moulds or press tooling (see 'Kirksite' type tooling alloys).

Application

Pressure diecasting. ZL 2 is used selectively for small castings where hardness and high tensile strength are essential properties. The high copper content of this alloy tends to reduce the dimensional stability and long term retention of mechanical properties is not as good as ZL 3 or 5 particularly when higher service conditions are expected. ZL 2 also suffers from a severe loss of ductility during ageing and should be avoided if post forming of the casting is envisaged.

When designing a stressed component using ZL2 further reference should be made to the alloys properties, at elevated temperatures, after natural or artificial ageing and the alloys creep properties.
